  … Handles 41, 867 tonnes of non-oil export The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has exceeded its 2023 annually revenue target by 55% as the command    between January to October 31 2023    generated the sum N3.1billion against the annual revenue target of N1.966billion of the command. The command has also facilitated the export of a total of 41, 867.88 metric tonnes of non-oil export products within the period, which comprise 1,048 trucks of export products with Free On-Board FOB value of N8.3billion. It also collected N41.5million under the Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme NESS while a total of N40.5million was collected as surcharge within the period under review.   The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko has said most of Nigeria seaports has become obsolete and therefore require urgent rehabilitation to enhance their global competitiveness. The MD disclosed this during a panel session at the just concluded Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) conference held in Lagos. He said the plan is in line with the need to carry out a substantial overhaul of the port facilities that the management embarked on a port rehabilitation plan, which is expected to gulp $1.1 billion. In his words, “Almost every port in Nigeria requires rehabilitation, this is why the NPA is initiating a substantial overhaul, starting with the Tin Can Island and Apapa Ports in Lagos; “The objective of the authority is to enhance the physical infrastructure of these ports to accommodate vessels of all sizes and increase the draft at the quay side, with the aim of achieving draft depths of up to 14 meters. ...

  The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service has announced the seizure of a substantial cache of items in about 14,574 seizures. The seizures which have a Duty Paid Value, (DPV) of N1,241,777,700 includes 17 cash vehicles, foreign parboiled rice, Indian hemp, and other illicit goods. The Acting Controller of the FOU Zone A, Hussein Ejibunu, disclosed this during a press briefing held in Lagos recently. The operation’s primary goal is to prevent revenue loss due to various infractions such as under-valuation, under-payments, and wrong classifications. The unit successfully recovered the sum of N115,456,534.94 from the issuance of Demand Notices (DN) to defaulters.   The Oyo/Osun command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS said it has generated a total of Eleven Billion, Six Hundred and Seventy Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Thirty Two Thousand, Five Hundred and Eighty Three Naira, Ninety One Kobo (₦11,679,732,583.91) as revenue between the month of September and October 2023.   The Western Marine Command (WMC) of the Nigeria Customs Services has successfully thwarted smuggling activities in the western waterways by intercepting contrabands valued at N923,794,000 Naira only between August to October 2023.    In order to address the urgent need for the evacuation of overtime cargoes at the ports and as well as     implementing a 48-hour Customs clearance process, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC),Adewale Adeniyi MFR, recently in Lagos, convened a meeting with stakeholders. The meeting which was airmen at to facilitating legitimate trade, was attended by Terminal Operators, Truck Owners, Licensed Customs Agents, and other essential stakeholders within the Port environment.  At the meeting, the CGC expressed the mission to fulfill the government's goal of decongesting the port by expediting the removal of containers that have lingered for an extended period.   The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA under the supervision of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, is to establish Blue Economy information desks at all International Airports in the country.   The effort received a boost after a fruitful discussion between the Honorable Minister of Aviation, Mr Festus Keyamo SAN and the DG/CEO NIMASA Dr Bashir Jamoh, OFR.   The Blue Economy desk at the Ports will enhance inter ministerial collaboration to harness potentials in Nigerian Maritime sector by creating awareness of a functional intermodal transport system, and tourism amongst others which are key components of a growing maritime nation.

  The Nigeria Customs Service has recommended collaboration between the service and the maritime industry to unlock the immense potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).
