The Apapa command of the Nigeria Customs Service has handed over seized Tramadol capsules worth over N3.7b  to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency  (NDLEA)   The drugs, according to the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, Comptroller Yusuf Malanta were packed in 150 cartons containing 4,500,000 capsules of 120mg  Comptroller Malanta while handing over the drugs to the  Narcotic Commander  of Apapa Special Area Command of  NDLEA,  Ameh Inalegwu, warned that Apapa Port will continually be a 'No Go Area' for all forms of illegal trade. T he Finance, Budget and National Planning Minister, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed cried out on  t he continued payment of fuel subsidy and servicing of external debts which she said has become a big burden to the economy. The Minister said the policy of paying fuel subsidy to oil marketers has made it difficult to service the nation’s debts. The Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Emeka Okafor, has expressed concern over the apparent effect of indiscriminate dumping of waste into rivers and oceans by those who resides along the coastal region. Admiral Okafor disclosed that there might be more plastics than fish in the country’s waters by 2050 if conscious effort is not made to discourage indiscriminate dumping of waste. The Hydrographer revealed that despite the huge benefits offered to mankind by the rivers and ocean, recent human activities are now threats to aquatic lives, he added that studies have predicted that tropical coral reefs could disappear by the turn of the century, and that by 2050 there could be more plastics in the oceans than fish. AP M Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s largest container terminal, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an indigenous firm, FREEE Recycle Limited, to recycle its used tyres. In December 2021, APM Terminals carried out a successful trial by using pavement blocks produced out of recycled and compressed used tyres for exterior flooring. Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony in Lagos, the Terminal Manager, APM Terminals, Steen Knudsen, said the MoU is in furtherance of the company’s contribution to reducing the harmful effects of industrial wastes on the environment. He said, “We are reducing environmental footprint in Nigeria, and I am super excited we have FREEE Recycle Limited to partner with. We are recycling the tyres into materials that can be used in other parts of the supply chain. “It is important to partner with companies that have different expertise to complement our efforts to ensure that together, we reduce the environmental footprint in our businesses". ...

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Emmanuel Jime, on Tuesday said demurrage collected by shipping liners on return of containers cost the nation a whopping N3 trillion annually. The Executive Secretary who described d eposit on return of containers as fraud, wondered why shipping liners are more interested in collecting demurrage than the actual business of shipping itself. Jime revealed that with the establishment of the Port Service Task Team, has saved the nation a total of $6,540 billion, about N3.270 trillion which was supposed to have been paid on vessels demurrage between 2020 to 2021. Speaking at a world press conference to mark his one year in office, on Tuesday, the Shippers’ Council boss said activities of the team was able to save the nation’s economy an average of $20, 000 daily on vessel demurrages within the year under review. The TinCan Island Ports complex has been ranked among the best performing seaports in West and Central Africa, ahead of Ports of Duoala (Cameroon), Cotonou (Benin Republic), Lome (Togo), Tema (Ghana) and Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire), according to the latest global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) launched recently by the World Bank. The 2021 performance ranking, based on the time vessels spend in the port to complete their workloads, covered 370 ports that recorded at least 20 valid port calls within the period under study. This assessment was conducted by a joint team from the Transport Global Practice of the Infrastructure Vice Presidency at the World Bank and the Maritime, Trade and Supply Chain Division of S & xP Global Market Intelligence.
