The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has announced the seizure of 13 containers at the Apapa Port in Lagos over trade infractions ranging from prohibited to expired and falsely declared goods, worth over N6.81 billion
The CGC stated this while speaking with newsmen at the APMT Terminal on Tuesday, where he said that customs officers uncovered the contraband through detailed scanning analysis and physical examination.
On medical infractions, he disclosed that a 40-foot container laden with large quantities of expired pharmaceutical products, including Mixagrip Cold Caplets, Ladinax tablets, Chloroquine injections and Diclofenac tablets, while two 40-foot containers were ladened with large consignments of Hyegra 200 and Sildenafil Citrate unregistered pharmaceuticals.
Giving further details of the seizures, the CGC said a 20-foot container had 800 cartons of Codeine (TPL CSC), concealed in toilet flushing cisterns and sanitary ware, while a 40-foot container had cartons of Artesunate 60 injections.
There were also a 40-foot container with 1,700 cartons of Codeine cough syrup concealed in luxury food flasks, and another 40-foot container with 1,575 cartons of CSMIX with codeine concealed in 156 cartons of electric kettles, alongside 13 cartons of Bristol brand Co-codamol 500mg and two cartons of Zevita brand Co-codamol 500mg.
Relatedly, 13 jumbo bags of Cannabis Sativa (Colorado) weighing 347.57kg and concealed in a Toyota Sienna vehicle were intercepted, he said.
The CGC further disclosed that a 20-foot container conveyed restricted security equipment, including bulletproof vests, helmets, walkie-talkies and tactical torches, without End-User Certificates.
Additional seizures included a 20-foot container with expired muffin cookie biscuits, a 20-foot container with 36,000 cans of expired Primo energy drinks, a 20-foot container with expired St. Kelvin tomato paste and another 20-foot container with expired De Truth tomato paste.
Adeniyi stressed that the importation of expired drugs and controlled substances poses a direct threat to public health, while the concealment of codeine-based products represents a calculated attempt to fuel abuses and undermine the nation’s healthcare system.
Warning that Apapa Port which is under the able leadership of Comptroller EOA Oshoba is no longer a playground for smugglers or criminal syndicates hiding behind legitimate trade documentation, the CGC said consignments have been forfeited outright, in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, while penalties would be imposed, evaded revenues recovered and all persons connected to the shipments prosecuted.
