...As Command Intercepts 1,300 Parcels of Cannabis to NDLEA Within two months
The Acting Area Controller of Ogun 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Deputy Comptroller OO Afeni, has assured smugglers and economic sabboteurs prowling the Ogun axis of consistent onslaught, as over seven thousand (7,000) parcels of cannabis were intercepted among other smuggled goods and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) by his command, while over six thousand (6,000) parcels are yet to be handed over just within two months of his assumption of office.
The Acting Controller stated this recently when he received the leadership of Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) who paid him a courtesy visit at the Command at the command's headquarters in Idiroko.
Afeni solicited stronger collaboration between the Nigerian Customs Service and the Maritime Media. He went further to assure the leadership of CONMMEP of his team's unwavering commitment to intensifying the ongoing onslaught against smugglers. He mentioned some vulnerable spots within the Command and how his team have continued to triumph against economic sabboteurs amidst all odds.
He equally mentioned that the command has scaled up on intelligence gathering within and around the axis, and some skirmishes that happened in some communities in January, he stated that he has held meetings with community leaders where he called on them to talk to their wards on dangers of smuggling and attacks on customs personnels carting out their lawful duties.
On Community welfare, the Controller disclosed that the Nigeria Customs has continued to carry out its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), providing educational and health care facilities in some communities as the command is still looking for more areas it can come in to do more for the communities.
While describing journalists as dependable allies, the Controller tasked them on genuine and verifiable reporting, and strongly stated that his Command is never averse to constructive criticism.
Speaking earlier, the President of CONMMEP, Comrade Udo Onyeka, expressed confidence in the abilities of Deputy Comptroller Afeni and his team to subdue economic sabboteurs within the axis and bring them to book while pledging for the associations support for the command in the area of balanced and constructive reportage and partnership where necessary.
In his vote of thanks, the Former President of CONMMEP, Alhaji Tunde Umar-Daniah, thanked the Acting Comptroller and his team for their patriotism, describing him as a seasoned officer whose administrative ability and professionalism were not in doubt, expressing optimism that he would surpass the expectations of many at the Idiroko Border Station.
