The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR has stressed on the importance of unity among maritime journalists showing concerned about the proliferation of different associations of journalists covering the beat saying that if they should come under one umbrella it would be easy for industry operators to relate with and there would be more for them to benefit.
Speaking at the occasion of the award dinner organised in his honour by Nigerian Maritime Journalists in Lagos on Thursday recognition of his excellent performance since he assumed office as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service 18 months ago.
The CGC, who was accompanied to the occasion by three Assistant Comptroller General (ACGs) including ACG in charge of Zone A, ACG Charles Orbih, all Customs Area Controllers in the Zone and their various Public Relations Officers, long time friends of the CGC appreciated the fact that the maritime journalists were able to come together under one body to give him the recognition adding that it was an opportunity to truly come together promising that if the journalists can come together he will use his position to appeal to other heads of agencies in the maritime industry relate better with the journalist in the areas of training, insurance cover and welfare journalists.
The Chairman of the occasion, former National President of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Prince Olayiwola Shittu, in his remarks said he was pleased that Adeniyi has performed exceedingly well since he assumed office. He commended the CGC for listening to the appeals of freight forwarders to suspend the implementation of 4% Free-on-Board (FOB) value on imports.
In his goodwill message, the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs in charge of Zone A, ACG Charles Orbih, affirmed the conferment of this golden award of Iconic Maritime of the year 2024 on the Comptroller General of Customs, reflecting on the remarkable transformation that has occurred within the service under his stewardship.
The modernization of the Nigerian Customs procedure, strengthening of risk management systems and optimization of revenue collection processes which has yielded unprecedented results. The ACG also hinged on the successes recorded in the area of Inter Agency collaborations and the greats achievements of the service in the area of anti smuggling recorded under the leadership of CGC Adeniyi.
Also in his goodwill message, ACG Charles Edike (Rtd) said he was not surprised that Bashir Adewale Adeniyi rose in the service to become the CGC and being honoured by the Maritime journalists, he said the CGC has always exhibited the symbols of a good leader since joining the service as a young officer. He prayed for him and the Nigerian Customs Service to always swaying higher.
Chairman of the Award Planning Committee, Elder Dele Aderibigbe, described the recognition as a unanimous decision by all maritime journalists. Saying, "This is the first time in the sub-sector everyone will come together to honour a deserving performer per excellence who has made the NCS and Nigeria proud by his purposeful, professional, and patriotic leadership".
The award night was also graced by eminent personalities in the maritime industry including the Prince Segun Oduntan, BOT Chairman of ANLCA, Otunba Frank Ogunojemite of APPFLON Dr Eugene Nweke president of Customs Consultative Council, Chief Remi Ogungbemi President of AMATO, among other dignitaries.
The Nigeria Maritime Journalists NMJ comprising of all the maritime media associations in the industry believes that CG Adeniyi has registered sterling and excellent performance since assumption of office as the Customs CGC.
These include unprecedented revenue collection, anti-smuggling activities, trade facilitation, national security, staff welfare, inter-agency collaboration, infrastructural upgrade, Information and Communication Technology, and Corporate Social Responsibility, among others.
