JBPT Intercepts Smuggled Goods, Illicit Drugs Worth N556.4M In 4 Weeks

The Joint Border Patrol Team sector 2 in the South West zone of the Nigeria Customs Service has made spectacular seizures worth more than N556.4 million within the last four weeks .

The Co-ordinator of the sector, Deputy Comptroller Mohammed Salisu Shuaibu disclosed this to  journalists in Lagos yesterday,, stating that 816 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50 kg each were amongst the goods intercepted by his men.

Other items seized include; 285 Bales of used clothes, 674kg of Cannabis Sativa, 61 Jumbo sacks of used shoes, 802 Jerry cans containing premium motor spirit (25 Litres each), 8 Units of used vehicles

He stated that in combating illegal migration across the international border, 34 illegal migrants were arrested by his men and handed over the same to the Nigeria Immigration Service for onward prosecution.

Continuing, DC Shuaibu affirmed that in their commitment to significantly distort the trade supply chain of illicit drugs, Joint Border Patrol Sector 2, intercepted 674kg of Cannabis Sativa at Idi-iroko, and Imeko areas of Ogun State during routine patrol operations. He informed that the narcotics will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation and further actions.

The effect of having this quantity of drugs in circulation has devastating effects on individuals, communities and society as a whole. Illicit drug use is often linked to organized crime, violence, banditry, kidnapping and health-related issues.

According to him, in their steadfast commitment to combating smuggling activities, we were protecting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring national security. We intensified patrols, sustained surveillance activities and enhanced intelligence gathering within the border corridors, which disrupted Smuggling networks.

While acting on the core mandate of the Joint Border Patrol Team, which is to combat smuggling and illegal migration; these two criminal activities are capable of undermining our economic growth, fueling insecurity, and exploiting vulnerable citizens.

He  urged all patriotic citizens to partner with the Nigeria Customs Service in combating smuggling to identify the smuggling networks and routes. Shuaibu said, "Jointly, we can safeguard Nigeria’s economy, ensure national security and safeguard public health.
