The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ikeja has continued with its giant stride in anti smuggling with the recent interception and seizures of 5,459 bags of 50kg size of foreign bags of rice which is equivalent to 9 trailer loads.
The Acting Controller of the unit, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu disclosed this while briefing the media yesterday at the headquarters of the unit in Ikeja. He equally revealed that the command anti-smuggling measures also led to seizure of a Toyota Highlander with an ingenious concealment of suspected bags of foreign parboiled rice at Iju-Ojuore in Ogun State.
Other seizures made by the unit according to the Acting CAC includes, 18,100 litres of PMS, 376 bales of used clothes, 1,926 cartons of frozen poultry products, 337 pieces of used compressors and 396 cartons of frozen fish.
Ejibunu also disclosed that the unit intercepted and seized 3units of 40 ft containers found to contain 3,838 pieces of used tyres and 13 used vehicles popularly known as Tokunbo.
While the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these seizures according to the FOU boss stood at N872,575,250, he revealed that 11 suspects were arrested in connection with offending importations.
On revenue, Ejibunu said “the sum of N71,254,984.71 was generated through conscious and thorough documentary checks, followed by the issuance of Demand Notices (DN) on consignments that were found to have paid lesser amounts than the appropriate Customs duty”.
While decrying on the methods of ingenious concealment used by these smugglers to beat the various checkpoints of officers, Ejibunu called for collaboration of all, saying, “This calls for the collaborative efforts of all citizens to support the Service by providing useful and timely information that would aid the anti-smuggling drive;
“These seizures reflect our commitment to the discharge of our functions; aimed at protecting the nation’s economy and preventing the importation of prohibited and harmful products from entering our domestic markets”
