Contrary to the news making the rounds that the new Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Apapa Customs Command, of the Nigeria Customs Service, Compt, Auwal Mohammed has rejected the use of the mobile scanners in the command for cargo examination , the Commandās Image maker, Chief Superintendent of Customs (CSC) Usman has cleared the air concerning the issue.
Usman, while speaking to our correspondent in his office said the CAC was quoted out of context. He said what his boss said was that no container will leave the port without being 100% examined and that the scanners which is like an X-ray machine will examine the container 100%.
He disclosed that the scanners, which were commissioned last year for operation scans about 175 containers on daily basis at the Apapa port.
On the possible effect of the cashless policy currently being witnessed in the country on the revenue of the command, Usman informed that the situation will have little or no effect on the revenue of the command noting that import duties are paid by the importers and their agents through bank transfers directly into the Government accounts.
He advised stakeholders to always come forward to the Public Relations unit of the command to verify any issue or information to avoid misinformation and misrepresentation.
