The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has emphasised the need for interoperable customs systems across Africa, describing it as a critical requirement for the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Customs Modernisation Project. Adeniyi made this known on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, in Lagos during the signing of a 20-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Agreement between the AfCFTA Secretariat and Bergmans Security to initiate the AfCFTA Customs Modernisation Project. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has again reaffirmed its commitment to advancing intra-African trade by deepening its partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to strengthen trade facilitation, enhance customs cooperation, and accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). In a bid to booast border security in the country, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has strengthened its border security and intelligence capabilities by deploying an INTERPOL Data Centre at its Headquarters in Abuja, giving officers access to one of the world's largest criminal intelligence networks. The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, announced the development during a demonstration of the facility, describing it as a major milestone in the Service's technology-driven transformation and intelligence-led enforcement strategy. The Lagos Free Trade Zone command of the Nigeria Customs Service NCS within the first half of year 2026, generated the sum of N408.869 billion, (Four Hundred and Eight billion, Eight hundred and sixty nine naira) only. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) have agreed to deepen their collaboration in order to improve ease of doing business, address persistent congestion along the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports corridors and accelerate cargo evacuation.
