Q 1: Onne Customs Collects N58bn Revenue, Seizes N59.4m Contraband

  The Onne Port Area Command, (Area II), of the Nigeria Customs Service, has collected a total of N58,059,198,130:33 for the first quarter of 2022, showing a 49.3% increase against the sum of  N38,877,314,286:12 generated within the Sam period of 2021. In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Ifeoma Onuigbo Ojekwu, the also made a total of 9 seizures with duty paid value of N59,490,705 Breakdown of the items seized includes shows 18,555 pairs of footwear worth N26,507,042; 270 pieces of machinery and parts worth N2,211,753; 3,825 pieces of used tyres worth N26,215,230 and 8 bags of rice worth N171,961. Other seizures made by the command includes, 555 cartons of soap and foreign detergent worth N2,709,254; 3 bales of textile fabrics worth N250,377 and 72 cartons of tomato paste worth N1,425,103. The European Union (E.U),  has commended the Nigerian Government for providing leadership in the Gulf of Guinea in the war against criminality in the maritime sector which has yielded desired results.  The commendation came at the end of a working visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA by the EU delegation which inspected assets under the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, otherwise known as the deep blue project.   Amb. The Nigeria Immigration Service  (NIS) at Lagos airport has in recent times identified and arrested some top facilitators of human traffickers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Lagos. According to a report by Business Day a  top official at the NIS disclosed that following the continual record of syndicate trying to traffic young girls out of Nigeria illegally through the Lagos airport, the command has put modalities in place to tackle human trafficking at the airport and ensure the country’s border remains secured. “Some of the young girls we have caught at the verge of being trafficked are convinced by the syndicates that they would be given a better life but we do our best to educate them on the ills of such an act. “The command is working with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to ensure human trafficking through the Lagos airport remains unsuccessful,” the top official said.   Apapa Customs Hits Over N246.5 Billion in First Quarter Of 2022  At the end of the first quarter of 2022, the flagship of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Apapa Area Command of has posted a whopping sum N264.5 billion as revenue generated within the period. The Customs Area Controller of the command, Compt. Yusuf  Malanta while reviewing the first quarter operations of the command said the amount collected represented a 65.7 per cent increase when compared to N159 billion generated in the same period in 2021. He attributed the increase in revenue to improved service through the information technology (IT) platforms, which he said helped to block revenue leakages, and sustain the level of compliance by importers and other stakeholders in the cargo clearance value chain. Ports Development: NPA Set To Partner Finland

The Nigerian Ports Authority said it is willing and ready to partner the Government of Finland in her quest to develop the country’s seaports thereby  making them competitive globally. Managing Director of the authority, Mohammed Bello-Koko, said this when he played host to the Ambassador of Finland to Nigeria, Her Excellency, Ms. Leena Pylvanainen, who was on a working visit to the NPA headquarters in Lagos. The Ambassador had in her opening remarks, said she was in NPA to further seek the deepening of the already existing relationship between Nigeria and the Finlands. You may recall that the NPA MD, whose appointment was recently  confirmed by President Muhammadu Buhari, had assured that the management under his watch would pay specific attention to automating the port processes in order to make the Nigeria seaports more efficient and globally competitive.

Asuu Accuses Communications Ministry Of Sabotaging Govt’s Efforts To Resolve Union’s Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Bauchi Zone has accused the Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) under the Ministry of Communications, of sabotaging the Federal Government’s efforts in resolving the rift between the government and the union. The union said that the reactions of the agency as well as the ministry to the reports on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) integrity test were unpatriotic and unethical. Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on warning strike on February 15, 2022, to press home its demands from the Federal Government as regards the 2020 MoA signed by both parties. THE SUNKEN “NIMASA-BARUGU VESSEL: Matters Arising

On Sunday 3rd April 2022, a video emerged on social media where a patrol vessel with the inscription NIMASA-Barugu on it and belonging to Messers Global West Specialist Vessels Limited sank in Lagos. The Boat was one of the Vessels owned by GWSVL and deployed for patrol during the implementation of a contractual agreement between the Company and the Agency, NIMASA.  The contract which was entered into in 2012 was for Global West to provide platforms and other equipment for NIMASA to patrol the Nigerian Maritime domain effectively in the quest to attain the status of an efficient Maritime Administration.  However, things went sour when in 2015 the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, started investigating the contract and instituted criminal cases against Global West Specialist Vessels Limited.   The Nigeria Customs Board has approved the promotion of 3,466 Officers out of which 34 Deputy Comptrollers emerged as full Comptrollers. PTML Customs Generates N51.6bn in First Quarter of 2022

The Ports Terminal MultiServices Limited (PTML) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has within the first quarter (January -March) 2022 generated a total of N51,629,992,669 (Fifty one billion, six hundred and twenty nine million, nine hundred and nine two thousand naira six hundred and sixty nine kobo. According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC) Muhammad Yakubu, the sum generated in this first quarter of 2022 is 10.2 percent higher than the sum of N46,850,639,870 generated within the same period of 2021, showing an increase of N4,779,352,799.
